Tips when planning a family holiday

girl with camera588x400Planning a family holiday can be great fun and something every member of the family can be involved in. See below a few ideas and tips to make sure you plan the right holiday for your family.

When Booking a Holiday

1. Holidays are for parents and kids. A great place to go is a holiday resort that has a kids club and lots of kids activities suitable to your kids age group. A lot of these places offer kids stay and eat for free (at certain times), and really welcome young travellers. Remember that kids club doesn’t mean your kids are in there all holiday. Plan it so the kids go a few times in the holiday and while they are there, plan some alone time or couple time. If you are not going to a resort, check on local and surrounding activities to make sure there is enough to do to keep the family entertained.

2. When you are booking ask about room facilities – eg for safety (balcony type, courtyards that are closed off), kitchen, microwave.  It’s also handy to ask about room configurations to ensure they will suit you and your children and whether bedrooms have balconies or unsafe windows.

3. We recommend booking at least a one bedroom apartment (separate bedroom to living area) with a baby and two bedroom if you have two or more children. Remember babies and small children still need to sleep in the day and go to bed around 7pm, so if they are sleeping where you are living you won’t have a holiday at all.

4. Also check if you are booking adjoining rooms that it is guaranteed 100% they will be adjoining before you book and pay.

5. If booking a rental car, ensure you book a car seat to suit the ages of your children. Most rental companies offer this service or you could use a baby equipment rental company.

6. Baby equipment rental companies operate in a lot of major and regional areas, and offer portcots, prams, car seats and toys for hire.

7. Check on dates and times on local festivals which might attract or deter you from travelling there at that time.

Just Before you Travel

1. Pack some plastic bottles or jars and fill them up with enough dishwashing liquid, napisan and washing powder for your holiday.

2. If you are bottle feeding, take your bottle brush, bottles, steriliser, formula container and formula. The brand and type of formula may not be available where you are travelling, especially if going overseas.

3. A great tip is pack the long life milk in 200 or 250 ml cartons. You can put these in your carry-on drawstring bag so your child can have milk on the trip.

4. Order some groceries online and have them delivered to your hotel or holiday accommodation the day you arrive. This will save you having to go to the supermarket to buy supplies the minute you arrive.

5. If travelling overseas or to a remote location, check medical facilities available, whether that is at the hotel, or local hospital or medical centre. You do not want to be looking for this information when your child is sick. Always pack a comprehensive medical kit appropriate to your destination. Also, check on outgoing flights so if you have to leave in an emergency, you have an idea if flights go daily or early morning/evening.

6. Leave details of your holiday with a family member or close friend at home and also keep a copy in your luggage/hotel safe. Details include flights, hotel details, insurance policy details, copy of passport and birth certificates and lost/stolen credit card phone numbers. Here’s an easy to complete form to hold all of these details.

7. When travelling overseas or to remote areas, check that your mobile has coverage. Take a phone card if not.

8. If you will be relying on taxis for transport, check with a taxi company at your destination whether you can order a taxi with a child seat or whether you will need to take yours with you.

9. For older children, a child safety harness (and booster if needed) is a great alternative for travel, as it still bolts into the vehicle but is compact to take with you.

Travel tips for holidays with young children

girl on beach 588x400Below are a few travel tips to help you when on a holiday with young children.

1. Do not try and do too much, gone are the days of seeing 7 countries in 15 days! Kids function better with some stability so try and stay in one location for at least 3 nights. (also makes unpacking and repacking kids stuff easier)

2. Plan your days to allow for rest, food and play stops – babies and young children still need to sleep in the day and older children will get restless if there is no play time allocated.

3. Water and food hygiene is critical to ensure nasty bugs to not ruin your holiday. Always take care, drink bottled water if you are unsure and use common sense with foods you buy.

4. Also use an antibacterial spray or wipes to kill germs in toilets, on table tops, in public transport, anywhere.

5. When at the beach always swim between the flags – make sure you know what different flags stand for.

6. Always put ID bands on your children, especially in a crowded place, like a theme park, the beach or in a city. These record your child’s name and your contact details in case they get lost.

7. Relax and enjoy time as a family.

Safety whilst on Holidays

1. If you have toddlers and small children that love to open cupboards and doors, going to a holiday apartment can be stressful. Just think like you do when you are home. Put all knives and sharp objects in the kitchen up in the high cupboards and take some kids locks that you can put on the outside of the doors/cupboards in the kitchen.

2. With the front door of the apartment, if you can’t lock it with a key on the inside, you can put a chair up against it so it makes it harder for the little ones to open. If it has a round knob, buy a child door lock for round knobs. They are also useful for putting on a baby’s room door so the older child cannot open the door.

3. Balconies can be very dangerous – remove any chairs or furniture away from the edge. A good tip also is to make sure you and all the adults in the apartment are not outside on the balcony and your child is inside and decides to be clever and lock you out. Have your wits about you as this can happen.

7 top tips for travelling with kids on planes

The kids ready to go.

The kids ready to go.

After just experiencing a plane trip with my 2 children, Ben 5 and Brooke 2, I thought I’d share my top 7 tips for plane travel with kids and how to make it an exciting time for all!

1 Pack a separate bag for the plane for each child containing an activity/sticker/reading books, texters, snacks and drink. We took a trunki (ride on luggage) for each of our kids which were superb. At the airport we could pull them along for the long walk to the gate, they fit easily underneath the seat on the plane, and when we got to our holiday unit, they had a ‘bike’ to ride on.

2 Don’t take toys that will roll off the tray onto the floor, eg blocks. Magnetic toys and books are great for all ages and will ensure you are not crawling along the ground at the end of the flight.

3 Another activity suggestion is to start your holiday journal on the flight. This is a fun activity to do with kids logging things they saw, did, ate on your holiday and creates a great memory of your trip. Start on the plane with – what colour is the plane, what seat am I sitting in, where am I going and so on.

4 Arrive at the airport at least 1 ½ hours before your flight (domestic), kids don’t like to be rushed, this gives you time to check in, go to toilet, buys a special plane treat and get to the gate.

5 We found getting the window seat a great distraction for kids – they are so excited looking out the window, you can fill in a lot of the plane travel with pointing out clouds, ocean, houses, other planes etc. It also makes it harder for them to run down the aisles!

6 Take chewy lollies on board with you for then descent. Kids cannot unblock their ears, and young children do not understand or reason with the pain. We took mentos and a curly wurly – they worked a treat, as the chewing motion unblocked their ears and gave them a great to look forward to. On our flight back home we made the mistake of bringing this treat out too early in the flight, it was finished before we descended and we therefore endured 20 minutes of crying from our 2 year old. (maybe take a back up pack in case!)

7 Upon landing, wait until everyone else has left the plane to get the kids off. That way you are not being rushed by the person behind and can take your time carrying kids, bags and so on down the plane steps and into the terminal.

8 (bonus point he he) If you have toddler that likes to run off, then try the Littlelife backpack with detachable harness. Your child will love wearing his/her own backpack but you will be relaxed knowing they cannot run off onto the tarmac, through security and everywhere else an exciting airport may lead them.

I hope this helps make plane travel exciting for your kids and relaxing for you.

Happy travelling.
